Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Kriel began playing rugby at a young age and developed through Maritzburg College, where he competed at the U18 Craven Week. He progressed into the Blue Bulls system and won a U19 provincial championship. He went on to represent South Africa U20 at the 2014 IRB Junior World Championship.
Kriel began his professional career with the Bulls before moving to the Stormers and later the Lions, competing across Super Rugby and Currie Cup competitions. He gained experience at the top level in South Africa and established himself as a reliable center.
He joined the Seattle Seawolves in 2022 and became a consistent starter, helping lead the team to two MLR Finals. During his time in Major League Rugby, he recorded over 3,200 meters gained, surpassed 500 tackles, and earned All-MLR Second XV honors in 2024.
Rugby runs in his family, with his twin brother Jesse Kriel representing the Springboks and his great-grandfather James McDonald Hodgson playing for the British and Irish Lions and England. Off the pitch, he supports childhood cancer initiatives through his charity, Happy Bundles, and enjoys time with family, golf, camping, traveling, and farming.
