Born in Atlantis, South Africa, Matthews began playing rugby at a young age through school programs and local competition. He developed through Swartland Hoërskool and progressed into the Blue Bulls academy system, representing both U19 and U21 sides as well as South Africa U20.
He began his professional career with the Bulls before moving to the Lions, competing in both Super Rugby and Currie Cup. He built experience across top South African competitions and established himself as a consistent backline option.
He joined the Seattle Seawolves in 2022 and has been a key starter since. He has played every match he has appeared in and has surpassed 4,000 meters gained in Major League Rugby, including leading the league in meters in 2025. His performances have helped the team reach multiple MLR Finals and earned him All-MLR honors.
Matthews credits his early development to his school and mentors, including Danny Peterson. Outside of rugby, he supports Happy Bundles and enjoys spending time with his family.
